Free AI Chatbot With a Mobile App: What to Look For
A free chat widget is only free until the first message arrives at half past eight on a Friday. Without a phone app, that message sits there until Monday. Here is what a support app really needs, and the honest limit of what you should do on a phone.
The short version
- The bot is not the hard part. Getting the leftover message to a human is.
- Push is the feature. Everything else in a support app is secondary to a phone that buzzes.
- A phone is bad at volume. It is for catching one urgent message, not clearing a queue.
- Check the free plan, not the product. Plenty of vendors have an app that free users cannot use.
The problem is not the bot. It is the hour.
A free AI chatbot on your website will handle most of what people ask. Opening hours, prices, where you are, whether you take card, whether you can fit someone in this week. Train it on your own pages and it answers those without you.
The trouble starts with the question the bot cannot finish. Someone wants a firm quote, or a booking moved, or they are cross about something. It is Friday evening. They are ready to spend money. And your only inbox is a browser tab on the office desktop.
That message waits until somebody opens a laptop. By Monday morning the person has already messaged two other businesses. You did not lose the sale because the AI was weak. You lost it because nothing on you buzzed.
Straight disclosure: EzyConn is our product, and our free plan includes the mobile apps.
Why our own research made us take this seriously
We scanned 4,278 small business websites across seven countries and found that only 7.5% ran any chat widget at all. Among the ones that did, a plain WhatsApp button was 53.7%, more than every dedicated chat vendor put together.
That is really a finding about phones. Nobody picks a WhatsApp button for its routing or its reporting. They pick it because the message lands on the handset in their pocket. So when you shop for a free AI chatbot, the useful question is not how clever the AI is. It is where the message goes when the AI gets stuck.
What a support mobile app actually needs
Most vendors list "mobile app" as one tick on a feature grid. That hides a lot. These are the parts that decide whether the app is useful or just installed.
| What to look for | What good looks like | What happens without it |
|---|---|---|
| Push that wakes the phone | A per-message alert with sound, not a daily digest | The message arrives and nobody knows until morning |
| Full conversation history | You can read what the AI already said before you reply | You repeat a question the customer answered ten minutes ago |
| Canned replies | Two taps instead of two minutes of thumb typing | You send a short, blunt reply that reads as rude |
| Handoff between people | You can pass a thread to a colleague and stop watching it | Whoever saw it first owns it forever, including on holiday |
| A visible online or away state | Customers are told when a human will actually reply | People wait for an answer that was never coming tonight |
| Quiet hours you can switch off | You can mute Sunday without uninstalling the app | You silence everything permanently after one bad weekend |
Push is the whole feature
Every app has a notifications toggle. Fewer get the details right, and the details are the difference between a tool and a decoration. You want an alert per conversation, with a sound, that survives a phone doing its best to save battery. Android in particular will happily put a chat app to sleep unless you tell it not to.
You also want to turn it off cleanly. A support app with no quiet hours gets muted after the first ruined Sunday lunch, and once muted it stays muted. Being able to switch off until Monday is what keeps it on the rest of the time. There is more detail on how the EzyConn mobile app page.
A phone is a poor place to handle volume
This is the part the marketing pages leave out, so we will say it plainly. You cannot run a support desk from a phone. Typing a careful reply with your thumbs is slow. You cannot see an order, a customer record and a long thread at the same time. Worst of all, you answer while distracted, standing in a queue at the shops, and it shows in the reply.
The right way to think about a support app is a smoke alarm with a reply button. It exists so that the one message a week that is genuinely worth money does not sit unanswered for fourteen hours. It is not where you work through a backlog on a Tuesday.
In practice that means a two-line reply on the phone and the real work on a computer. "Yes, we can do that. I will send details first thing in the morning." That one line, sent at nine in the evening, usually keeps the customer.
What our free plan includes
Here is the whole free plan, so you can hold it against anything else you are looking at.
| Free plan | What you get |
|---|---|
| Price | $0 forever, no credit card, does not expire |
| Seats | 2 |
| Messages | 500 a month, resets every month |
| Chatbots and integrations | 1 chatbot, 2 integrations |
| Mobile | iOS and Android apps, plus push notifications |
| Vendor branding on the widget | EzyConn badge, removable on Professional |
| Also included | Contacts, Team, Bookings, Analytics and Reports |
| AI models | GPT-4o and Claude, trained on your website |
Microsoft Teams, Slack, WhatsApp and Zapier work on every plan, the free one included, within its 2 integrations. Starter at $25 a month adds outbound campaigns, workflows and AI Actions. Professional at $95 a month adds AI Insights and AI Email, and paying yearly takes 20% off. The whole ladder is on the pricing page. So even the free plan is a website widget you can answer from your pocket.
How other free plans compare
Tawk.to. It is free with unlimited agents, and it has mobile apps. In our scan it turned up on 9.9% of the sites that had chat, which is a lot for a tool nobody pays for.
The trade is the badge on your widget, which we cover in our piece on running a free chat widget with no watermark. If you would rather compare free tiers side by side first, the best free AI chatbot rundown is the place to start.
Test it before you trust it
Whichever tool you choose, do this once. Install the app, allow notifications, exclude it from battery optimisation and give it a sound. Then open your own website on another device at nine in the evening and send a message as a stranger would. If your phone buzzes and you can reply in a minute, it works. If not, you have a widget that collects messages rather than answers them, which is worse than no widget at all.
Common questions
Is there a free AI chatbot with a real mobile app?
Yes. The EzyConn free plan includes the iOS and Android apps plus push notifications at no cost, alongside 2 seats, 500 messages a month, 1 chatbot and 2 integrations. Full disclosure: EzyConn is our product. Other vendors ship free tiers with apps too, so check the app is on the free plan specifically, not just on the product.
Do I need the mobile app if the AI answers most questions?
You need it for the small share the AI cannot finish. The AI handles hours, prices, location and policy questions on its own. The app exists for the one message a week that is worth real money and arrives after you close. If nobody sees that message until morning, the free widget has not gained you anything.
Can I actually run customer support from a phone?
For a handful of messages a day, yes. For volume, no. Typing careful replies on a phone is slow, and it is easy to answer badly because you are distracted. Treat the app as a way to catch one urgent conversation, not a place to work through a backlog.
Will push notifications wake my phone reliably?
Only if you set the phone up for it. Allow notifications when the app first asks, exclude the app from battery optimisation on Android, and give it a notification sound rather than leaving it silent. Then send yourself a test message from your own website in the evening. If the phone does not buzz, fix that before you rely on it.
