Holiday Hours Messages: 25 Templates for 2026
A closed sign loses the customer who wanted something tonight. These 25 messages, grouped by channel, say when you are away, when you are back, and what still works in between.
The short answer
A good holiday hours message fits in two or three short lines and says five things: the exact dates you are closed, with weekdays; the day and time you reopen; what still works while you are away, such as online orders, booking or the website chat; where to get help now; and any deadline that matters, like the last day to order for Christmas delivery. In 2026, Thanksgiving is Thursday 26 November and Christmas Day is a Friday.
Every December, small businesses publish the same message in a dozen places: “We’re closed for the holidays. We’ll be back soon.” It is polite, and it costs them customers. The person reading it wanted something: a gift that arrives by the 24th, an appointment in the first week of January, an answer about a return. “Back soon” tells them to look somewhere else.
The messages that keep customers do two extra things. They give a real return date, and they say what still works while the team is away: the online shop is taking orders, the chat can answer questions, bookings for January are open. Below are 25 templates written that way, grouped by channel, with the 2026 dates already filled in. Copy them, change the bracketed parts, and adjust the dates to your own plan.
The 2026 dates to plan around
Christmas Day falls on a Friday this year, which hands many businesses a long weekend from Thursday 24 December, and New Year’s Day is also a Friday. Hanukkah starts early, on the evening of 4 December, and the US Postal Service flags that on its own deadlines page.
| Date | What | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday 8 November | Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) | Drik Panchang, New Delhi calendar. Dhanteras is Friday 6 November, Bhai Dooj Wednesday 11 November |
| Thursday 26 November | Thanksgiving (US) | Black Friday follows on Friday 27 November |
| Friday 4 to Saturday 12 December | Hanukkah | Begins at sundown on 4 December, ends at nightfall on 12 December |
| Wednesday 9 December | USPS international send-by date | First-Class Package International and Priority Mail International, for delivery before Christmas |
| Thursday 17 December | USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail send-by date | Contiguous US. Priority Mail: Friday 18 December. Priority Mail Express: Saturday 19 December |
| Thursday 24 December | Christmas Eve | Many businesses close early |
| Friday 25 December | Christmas Day | US federal holiday; UK bank holiday |
| Saturday 26 December | Boxing Day | In England and Wales the bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December |
| Thursday 31 December | New Year’s Eve | Many businesses close early |
| Friday 1 January 2027 | New Year’s Day | US federal holiday; UK bank holiday |
Sources: OPM federal holidays, GOV.UK bank holidays, Hebcal, Chanukah 2026, Drik Panchang, Diwali 2026 and USPS 2026 holiday shipping deadlines, all read on 21 October 2026. Diwali dates can differ by a day between regional calendars, so check the one your team follows.
A note on shipping cut-offs: the USPS dates are the days to hand parcels over. Your order cut-off has to come earlier, by however long it takes you to pick and pack. A shop that ships the next working day would tell customers to order standard shipping by Wednesday 16 December and Priority by Thursday 17 December, which is what the templates below assume. If you use another carrier, read its own holiday page and change the dates.
What every holiday hours message needs
The dates, with weekdays. “Closed 24 to 27 December” is clearer than “closed over Christmas”. Weekdays stop people doing calendar arithmetic.
The return day and time. “Back Monday 28 December at 9am” tells a customer whether to wait. “Back after the holidays” does not.
What still works. Orders still ship, the chat still answers, January bookings are open. This line is the one that keeps the sale.
Where to get help now. A help page, the website chat, an urgent route if someone is checking. One place, not five.
The deadline that matters. The last order date for Christmas delivery, the last day to book before you close, when returns restart.
Two smaller habits help. Add your time zone if customers buy from other regions, because “back at 9am” means three different things across the US. And keep the wording the same on every channel, so a customer who sees the banner, then the chat, then the email gets one story.
25 holiday hours message templates, by channel
Text in square brackets is yours to replace. The dates follow one example plan: closed 24 to 27 December, short hours 28 to 31 December, closed 1 January. Swap in your own.
Website banner
One or two lines at the top of every page. Readers skim a banner, so lead with the dates and finish with what still works.
1. Thanksgiving
We’re closed Thursday 26 November for Thanksgiving and back Friday at 9am. Online orders still go through, and our chat can answer questions in the meantime.
2. Christmas closure
Holiday hours: closed 24 to 27 December, back Monday 28 December at 9am. Orders placed now ship on the 28th. Questions? The chat in the corner is open.
3. Christmas delivery cut-off
Order by Wednesday 16 December for delivery before Christmas with standard shipping, or by Thursday 17 December with Priority. E-gift cards go out by email any time.
4. New Year
Closed Friday 1 January. Open again Saturday 2 January from 10am. Happy New Year from everyone at [Business].
Email autoresponder
The out of office message people actually read, because it lands in their inbox seconds after they write. Give it a subject line that says the return date.
5. Christmas to New Year closure
Subject: We’re back Monday 4 January Hi, thanks for your email. Our office is closed from Thursday 24 December to Sunday 3 January, and we’ll reply in the order messages arrived from Monday 4 January. While we’re away, online orders are still open and ship from 4 January. Delivery times, tracking and returns are covered on our help page: [link]. The chat on our website can answer most questions now. If an order arrived damaged, reply with a photo and the word URGENT in the subject. [Name] checks those on 29 December. Happy holidays, [Business]
6. Thanksgiving weekend
Thanks for writing. We’re closed Thursday 26 and Friday 27 November for Thanksgiving and back on Monday 30 November. Our sale runs online all weekend, and orders placed now ship on Monday. For delivery and returns questions, see [link].
7. Diwali
Thank you for your message. Our team is celebrating Diwali, so the office is closed from Sunday 8 to Tuesday 10 November. We’ll reply from Wednesday 11 November. Appointments for later in the month can be booked online at [link]. Wishing you and your family a happy Diwali.
8. Reduced hours over the holidays
Holiday hours from 21 December to 3 January: we’re answering email Monday to Thursday, 10am to 2pm [time zone]. Expect a reply within one working day. Normal hours return on Monday 4 January.
Website chat
The chat is the one channel that can still do something while you are away, so these messages point at what it can do rather than at the closed door.
9. Greeting while the team is off (shop)
Hi! The team is off until Monday 28 December, but I can help now with orders, delivery and returns. What do you need?
10. Greeting while closed (service business)
Hi, we’re closed for the holidays until Saturday 2 January, but you can book any day after that right here. What would you like to book?
11. When the question needs a person
That one needs someone from the team. They’re back Monday 28 December at 9am. Leave your email and they’ll reply first thing.
12. The holiday hours answer itself
Q: Are you open over the holidays? A: We’re closed 24 to 27 December and on 1 January. On 28 to 31 December we’re open 10am to 4pm. Online orders and bookings stay open the whole time.
People write on WhatsApp expecting a quick reply. If you use the WhatsApp Business app, its away message setting sends text like this automatically.
13. Thanksgiving
Thanks for your message! We’re closed for Thanksgiving on Thursday 26 November and reply from Friday at 9am. You can order online any time: [link].
14. Christmas
Hi, we’re away for the holidays until Monday 28 December. Your message is safe here and we’ll reply in order. Delivery and returns answers are at [link].
15. Diwali (appointments)
Happy Diwali! The clinic is closed 8 to 10 November. To book for later in November use [link], or send your preferred day here and we’ll confirm on 11 November.
Phone greeting
Read aloud, a greeting needs fewer numbers than a banner. Say the return day once, slowly, and give one place to go next.
16. Closed message
Thank you for calling [Business]. We’re closed from Thursday 24 December and open again on Monday 28 December at 9am. You can order and book online at [web address], and the chat there can answer most questions tonight. Happy holidays.
17. For a line answered by an AI assistant
Hi, you’re speaking with [Business]’s AI assistant. The team is away until Monday 28 December, but I can answer questions about our holiday hours, prices and delivery. How can I help?
18. Reduced hours
Thanks for calling [Business]. Between Christmas and New Year our phones are open 10am to 2pm, Monday to Wednesday. Outside those hours, [web address] has our holiday hours and online booking.
Social posts
Post once three weeks out, pin it, and repost the week of the closure. Put the dates in the image as well as the caption.
19. Holiday hours post
Our holiday hours are here. Closed 24 to 27 December and 1 January. Open 10am to 4pm on 28 to 31 December. Last day to order for Christmas delivery: 16 December. The online shop and booking stay open throughout. Save this post!
20. Seasonal greeting with hours
Happy Hanukkah to everyone lighting candles from 4 December, and happy holidays to all of you. We’re open our normal hours until 23 December, then closed 24 to 27 December. E-gift cards by email any time: [link].
21. Shipping cut-off reminder
Two days left to order for Christmas delivery. Standard shipping: order by Wednesday 16 December. Priority: by Thursday 17 December. After that, e-gift cards arrive by email in minutes.
Door sign, order emails and the return
The places owners forget: the door, the order confirmation, and the message that says you are back.
22. Door sign
Holiday hours Thu 24 Dec: 9am to 1pm Fri 25 to Sun 27 Dec: closed Mon 28 to Thu 31 Dec: 10am to 4pm Fri 1 Jan: closed Shop and book any time at [web address]
23. Line for the order confirmation email
Thanks for your order. We’re closed 24 to 27 December, so orders placed now ship on Monday 28 December. You’ll get tracking by email when it leaves.
24. We’re back
We’re back! The shop reopened today at 9am, and we’re answering holiday messages in the order they arrived. If you wrote to us over the break, expect a reply by Wednesday.
25. Reduced hours, any channel
From [date] to [date] we’re on reduced hours: [days], [hours] [time zone]. Online orders and bookings are open as usual, and replies may take one extra working day.
The chat greetings above follow the same rules as any good opening line: short, specific, and ending on a question. Our guide to writing chatbot greetings has more examples for the rest of the year.
Setting holiday hours on Google Business Profile
For a local business, the hours Google shows in Search and Maps matter as much as anything on your own site. Google’s help page, How to set Special hours (read 21 October 2026), gives the steps on a computer:
- Go to your Business Profile and choose Edit profile, then Hours.
- In Business hours, select the edit icon next to Special hours.
- Pick a date: a suggested holiday, a custom date, or one you already set.
- Mark the day open and enter the hours, or leave it closed. You can add more than one set of hours for a day.
- Select Save.
Three details from the same page are worth knowing. Google suggests confirming your hours for official holidays even when they match your normal hours, so people can trust what they see. Special hours are meant for changes of up to six days in a row; for a closure of seven days or more, Google recommends marking the business temporarily closed instead. And special hours only show if your profile is set to open with main hours.
Setting the email autoresponder
In Gmail, the setting is called the vacation responder: Settings, See all settings, then the General tab. You enter the date range, a subject and the message. Google’s help page on sending an automatic reply when you’re out of office (read 21 October 2026) adds two useful details: the reply runs from 12:00 AM on the first day to 11:59 PM on the last, and each person usually gets it only the first time they write, then again if they write after four days. So a customer who emails three times in one evening sees your message once. Put everything they need in that one reply.
Set a calendar reminder for the morning you reopen to switch it off. An autoresponder still promising a reply “from 4 January” on 12 January does more harm than no autoresponder at all.
Worked example: one salon’s closure week
Juniper Lane Hair is a salon we made up for this example. It closes at 1pm on Thursday 24 December, stays closed Friday 25 to Monday 28 December, opens 10am to 4pm from Tuesday 29 to Thursday 31 December, closes again on Friday 1 January and is back to normal on Saturday 2 January. Early January is one of its busiest weeks, because people want a fresh cut for the new year.
Say 40 people get in touch during the four closed days and half of them want an appointment. Those are assumptions for the arithmetic, not benchmarks. That is 20 booking requests arriving while nobody is at the desk. If the salon’s average appointment is $70, also invented, every five of those who give up and book elsewhere is $350 of January work gone before the salon reopens. Here is what each channel says, and what still works behind it:
| Channel | What it says | What still works |
|---|---|---|
| Website banner | “Closed 25 to 28 December and 1 January. Book online any time.” | Online booking |
| Website chat | Template 10, with the closure dates | The AI agent answers prices and holiday hours, offers real free times from the salon’s calendar and books them |
| Template 14, adapted | The AI agent answers from the same content as the website chat | |
| Email autoresponder | Template 5, shortened, pointing to booking in the chat | The link to book |
| Phone | Template 16, with “book in the chat at our website” | Callers hear the return day and where to book |
| Google Business Profile | Special hours for 24 December to 1 January | The right hours in Search and Maps |
| Template 19, pinned to the profile | A link to booking in the bio |
The difference shows up in a single conversation. The same customer writes on Saturday night, the day after Christmas:
Worked example
Can I get a cut and colour on Saturday the 2nd?
Closed message only
Salon closed 25 to 28 December
- CustomerHi! Can I get a cut and colour on Saturday the 2nd?
- Auto-replyThanks for your message. We’re closed until Tuesday 29 December and will reply when we’re back.
- Two and a half days pass
- Front deskHi! Sorry, Saturday the 2nd is now full. Would Tuesday the 5th work?
The reply is friendly and arrives after the slot the customer wanted has gone.
Chat that books while closed
Same salon, same closure
- CustomerHi! Can I get a cut and colour on Saturday the 2nd?
- AI agentWe’re closed until the 29th, but I can book you in now. On Saturday 2 January I have 10:00 or 14:30. Which suits you?
- Customer10:00 please.
- AI agentBooked: Saturday 2 January at 10:00. A confirmation is on its way to your email.
Booked on Saturday night, before the salon reopened.
Neither reply is rude. The first one simply arrives after the slot has gone. The salon’s holiday message did its job of saying it was closed; it did not let the customer do what they came to do.
Your holiday hours checklist
Do this once, in the first half of November, and again the week before you close.
- Decide the plan first: closed days, short days, the order and booking cut-offs, who checks urgent messages.
- Write one master message with the five parts above, then cut it down for each channel.
- Website: banner, contact page, shipping page with the cut-off dates, and the answer your chat gives to “are you open?”.
- Google Business Profile: special hours for every changed day, including the days you are open as normal on a public holiday.
- Email: autoresponder dates set, subject line with the return date, a reminder to switch it off.
- WhatsApp and social: away message scheduled, holiday hours post pinned, cut-off reminder planned.
- Phone: greeting recorded or written with the return day, and changed back when you reopen.
- Order emails and the door: a one-line note in confirmations, a sign in the window.
- The return: a “we’re back” post and an hour blocked on the first morning for the messages that waited.
Online stores have a second job in the same weeks, the Black Friday and Cyber Monday rush. Our holiday season support plan for 2026 covers the questions that peak then and how to prepare answers in advance, and the 2026 holiday shopping numbers show when the spending lands.
Keeping the chat answering while you are closed
Every template above is better when the line “the chat can answer questions now” is true. With EzyConn, the AI agent keeps answering on your website chat and on WhatsApp while the team is away, from your own website pages, files and the answers you write. Most holiday questions are already on your site somewhere: delivery dates, returns, gift cards, opening hours.
- Teach it your holiday hours. Add template 12 as an exact question and answer, which the agent uses first, word for word. Update it when your plans change, and again when you reopen.
- Keep the details of everyone who writes. The pre-chat form asks for a name, email and phone number before the conversation starts, so a question that needs a person still leaves you a way to reply on the first morning back. Our guide to capturing website leads after hours covers the rest of the year.
- Let people book. For service businesses, from the Starter plan, the agent offers real free times in the chat and books them, reading your connected Google Calendar or Microsoft 365 calendar so it only offers times you are free. Confirmations go out by email. The bookings page shows how it works.
- Pass the rest to your team. When a question needs a person, the agent offers one. If nobody is free, the customer sees “All our agents are currently busy. We’ll notify you shortly.” and the whole conversation waits in your inbox for the morning you are back.
- Your phone line, in your words. From the Starter plan, the agent can answer calls on your own Twilio number with a greeting you write, such as template 17, and answers callers from the same knowledge as the chat. Bookings happen in the website chat, so point callers there. The AI phone answering page has the setup.
The AI agent is on every plan, Free included, with no card. The website chat goes live in about 3 minutes with one script tag. You can add a free AI chatbot to your website before the holidays and ask it what your customers will ask you in December, or compare the plans on the pricing page. To connect WhatsApp as well, see the WhatsApp integration.

Holiday hours messages: common questions
What should a holiday hours message say?
Five things, in this order: the dates you are closed or on reduced hours, with weekdays; the day and time you reopen; what still works while you are away, such as online orders, booking or the website chat; where to get help now; and any deadline that matters, like the last day to order for delivery before Christmas. Two or three short sentences cover all of it.
How do I say closed for the holidays professionally?
Be specific and brief. “We’re closed 24 to 27 December and back Monday 28 December at 9am. Online orders still ship from the 28th, and our chat can answer questions now.” Specific dates read as more professional than “closed for the holidays”, and naming what still works keeps the customer with you instead of sending them elsewhere.
What is a good out of office message for Christmas?
Put the return date in the subject line, then say when you are away, when you will reply, and where to get answers in the meantime. For example: “Subject: We’re back Monday 4 January. Our office is closed from 24 December to 3 January. Online orders are still open, and our help page answers delivery and returns questions.” Add one route for urgent problems if someone is checking.
How do I set holiday hours on Google?
In your Business Profile, choose Edit profile, then Hours, then the edit icon next to Special hours. Pick each date, mark it open with hours or closed, and save. Google suggests confirming your hours for official holidays even when they match your normal hours. For a closure of seven days or more, it recommends marking the business temporarily closed instead.
When should I post my holiday hours?
Two to three weeks ahead for Christmas and New Year, so early December at the latest, and the first half of November for Thanksgiving. Set Google special hours at the same time. Post the shipping cut-off before your customers start ordering gifts, then repost both the week of the closure.
Should I say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays?
Whichever fits your business and your customers. “Happy holidays” covers Hanukkah, which runs from 4 to 12 December in 2026, Christmas and New Year in one phrase, so it suits a mixed audience. A business that is closing specifically for Christmas or Diwali can say so; the dates and the return day matter more than the greeting.
What are the 2026 USPS holiday shipping deadlines?
For delivery in the contiguous US before 25 December, USPS recommends sending Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail by Thursday 17 December, Priority Mail by Friday 18 December and Priority Mail Express by Saturday 19 December. International First-Class Package and Priority Mail International should go by Wednesday 9 December. USPS says actual delivery dates may vary.
Can customers still book or get answers while we are closed?
Yes, if a channel stays open. A website chat with an AI agent answers questions from your own pages while you are away, takes contact details, and for service businesses can book appointments into your calendar. In EzyConn, bookings in chat are available from the Starter plan with a connected Google or Microsoft 365 calendar, and the AI agent itself is on every plan, Free included.
