Free AI Chatbot With Unlimited Conversations: Who Actually Offers One?
Search that phrase and you will find plenty of pages promising exactly it. Open the pricing pages behind them and the promise usually comes apart. The word "unlimited" is doing three different jobs, and only one of them is the job you are shopping for.
The short version
- Nobody serious gives unlimited AI conversations for free. Every AI reply costs the vendor money.
- "Unlimited" usually attaches to human chats or seats, which are much cheaper to give away.
- EzyConn's free plan caps AI at 500 messages a month. We would rather print the number than bury it.
Full disclosure first: EzyConn is our product, so we have an obvious interest in how you read this. We have also read a lot of competitors' pricing pages, and the pattern underneath the word "unlimited" is worth writing down plainly.
The word is doing three different jobs
When a chat vendor writes "unlimited" on a pricing page, it is almost always attached to one of the things below. Notice which line is cheap for the vendor and which one is not.
| The claim | What it covers | Why it can be given away |
|---|---|---|
| Unlimited conversations | Chats your own team handles, with no monthly ceiling | Your staff are the real limit, so the software rarely needs one |
| Unlimited agents or seats | How many colleagues can log in and reply | An extra login costs the vendor almost nothing |
| Unlimited AI conversations | Automated replies written by a language model | Almost never free, because every reply has a real model cost |
The first two cost a vendor almost nothing. The third costs real money every time it fires, which is the whole reason it gets a meter and the others do not.
Why AI is the one meter that stays switched on
An AI reply is not a database lookup. Each answer sends your visitor's question, plus the relevant pages from your site, through a large language model, and the vendor pays for that request. Ten thousand answers cost roughly ten thousand times one answer.
So the cost of your free plan rises with your traffic, not with the vendor's success. Nobody writes a blank cheque against a number they cannot see, so the only real question is whether the meter is described honestly. If you want the underlying model costs, we set them out in AI chatbot vs the ChatGPT API.
Four ways vendors meter free AI
| Meter | How it works | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly conversation cap | A fixed number that resets on your billing date | Easy to plan around. You know the ceiling before you sign up. |
| One-off allowance | A starter batch of AI replies that never refills | Reads like a free plan, behaves like a trial. |
| Dollar credit balance | A pot of money spent down as the AI answers | Hardest to forecast. The AI can stop mid-month. |
| Per resolution | A price charged each time the AI closes a case | No ceiling at all. The meter and the invoice both keep running. |
Real examples of each, with numbers we have checked rather than guessed. EzyConn uses a monthly cap: 500 messages on the free plan, resetting every month.
Tidio's free tier is the one-off allowance shape. Its 50 Lyro AI conversations are described as one-off rather than monthly, so free-tier AI stops for good once they are spent. Removing Tidio branding is a separate add-on of roughly $16.67 a month, and Lyro conversations start around $32.50 a month for 50.
Crisp is the dollar credit balance. Its free plan has no AI at all. On paid plans the AI arrives as credit: about $5 on Mini at $45 a month, which Crisp equates to roughly 90 automated conversations, and about $25 on Essentials at $95, roughly 450. When the balance empties, the automation stops until you top up or the period rolls over.
Intercom is per resolution: $39 per seat per month, with Fin billed at $0.99 for each resolution. There is no cap to hit, which sounds like freedom until you have a busy month.
How Crisp compares, plainly
Crisp includes unlimited conversations on every plan, which is rare.
The honest caveats are the ones above. You cannot test the AI before paying, because the free plan has none. The AI runs on a credit balance rather than a conversation count, so a good month can switch it off. And removing the Crisp watermark starts on the Plus plan at $295 a month.
The other kind of unlimited: seats
Tawk.to is the best-known free tool giving unlimited agent seats, which is generous if your problem is eight people and two logins. But the free product is built around your team doing the answering, and its AI is positioned to help agents rather than keep conversations away from them. Match the tool to the problem you actually have: more logins, or fewer questions reaching a human at all.
Work out the number you actually need
Most people searching for unlimited do not need unlimited. They need a number and have never worked one out. Take your monthly visitors, multiply by the share who open the chat, then multiply by the share the AI can finish without a human.
| Monthly visitors | Chats if 1% open it | Chats if 3% open it | What that implies |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2,000 | 20 | 60 | Inside a 100/month free cap |
| 5,000 | 50 | 150 | Free cap holds at the low rate only |
| 20,000 | 200 | 600 | You are paying somebody |
| 50,000 | 500 | 1,500 | Volume is now a budget line |
The 1% and 3% are placeholders to show the shape of the arithmetic, not measured rates. Your own rate is the only one that matters, and the cheapest way to learn it is to run one month on any free plan and count.
One thing to keep in mind: our scan of 4,278 small business websites found only 7.5% running any chat widget. If you are adding chat for the first time you are estimating from zero, which is another reason to measure a month rather than buy a big plan on a hunch.
What EzyConn's free plan is, exactly
$0 forever, no credit card. Two seats, 500 messages a month, one chatbot. A mobile app with notifications. The AI runs on GPT-4o and Claude, and it is trained by crawling your own website rather than by you writing scripts.
Above that: Starter at $25 a month for 5,000 messages and Professional at $95 a month for 25,000, with Enterprise by agreement. Annual billing takes 20% off. Full detail is on the pricing page.
None of those is unlimited either, and that is deliberate. Offering unlimited AI means pricing for the heaviest possible user, and every ordinary customer pays for that headroom. A number you can check against your traffic beats a word you cannot.
How to read any of these pricing pages in two minutes
- Does the free tier include the AI at all, or only human chat?
- Is the cap counted in conversations, messages or dollars? Dollars are the hardest to predict.
- Does the allowance reset every month, or is it a one-off batch?
- When it runs out, does the AI stop or does the billing continue?
- Is the widget branded, and what does removing that brand cost?
- Are seats capped, and what does adding the fifth person do to the price?
Six questions, and they sort the market faster than any comparison table. Free tiers ranked against each other live on our best free AI chatbot page.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free AI chatbot with truly unlimited conversations?
Not in any meaningful sense. Every AI reply costs the vendor money at the model, so free tiers are metered somewhere. What you will find is unlimited human conversations, or unlimited agent seats, given away on plans where the AI is still capped. If a page promises unlimited AI for nothing, check whether the word unlimited is attached to the AI or to something cheaper.
What does unlimited conversations actually mean on a chat pricing page?
Usually it means your own team can talk to as many visitors as they like, with no ceiling on human chats. That is cheap for a vendor to offer because your staff are the real limit. It rarely means unlimited automated replies. Read the AI line separately from the conversation line, because they are almost always metered differently.
How many AI conversations does a small website actually need each month?
Take your monthly visitors, multiply by the share who start a chat, then multiply by the share the AI can finish without a human. Many small sites land under 100 a month. If you have never measured it, run one month on any free plan and count the real number instead of guessing.
What happens when a free AI chatbot hits its cap?
It depends on the meter. A monthly conversation cap stops the AI until the next month, then resets. A one-off allowance stops the AI permanently. A dollar credit balance stops it whenever the money runs out, which can happen mid-month. A per-resolution price never stops at all, it just keeps billing. Find out which one you are signing up for.
