Free AI Chatbot, No Credit Card: How to Tell Real Free From a Countdown

Three very different things get sold under the word free. One of them never charges you. One of them charges you in two weeks. One of them charges you and hopes you were not paying attention. Here is how to tell which one you just signed up for, in about a minute.

The short version

  • No card field usually means no end date. A vendor that never took a card cannot start billing you.
  • A card at signup is a default, not a formality. Being charged takes no action from you. Stopping it does.
  • Disclosure: EzyConn is our own product. Its free plan is 500 messages a month, which is about three a day.

Four things the word "free" is doing

When a chatbot vendor says free, they mean one of four arrangements. They look similar on a landing page. They behave very differently a month later, and the difference shows up on your bank statement.

ArrangementWhat you hand overWhat happens next monthWho it suits
Free foreverEmail and passwordNothing changes. The cap stays the same.Teams testing slowly, with real customers
Free trialOften a card, sometimes a plan choice tooPaid billing starts on the named dateTeams who have already decided to buy
Freemium with a card on fileA card, plus a plan you must remember to leaveA charge, unless you downgraded in timeAlmost nobody, in practice
Free tier inside a paid toolEmail, sometimes a cardFeature walls appear as you growTeams who need one narrow feature only

A free forever plan is a permanent tier of the product with limits built in. A free trial is the full product for a set number of days. Freemium with a card on file is the confusing middle: a free tier that still collects your payment details at signup, so the vendor is ready the moment you cross a line.

Why a card at signup usually turns into a charge

Nothing here is a scam. It is just how defaults work. If your card is saved, the quiet option is that you get billed. You have to remember a date, find the right settings page, and confirm a downgrade. Doing nothing costs money. That is the whole mechanism.

Three specific things go wrong. First, the reminder email lands in a promotions folder that nobody reads. Second, the trial often ends by converting to an annual plan, so one missed date becomes twelve months rather than one. Third, a saved card lets a vendor bill usage above your included amount without asking. That last one matters most with AI, because usage is spiky. A single busy week, or one page that gets shared somewhere, can double your conversation count.

There is a fair version of this too. If you already know you are buying, a card at signup saves you a step and gets you the full feature set on day one. The problem is only when you thought you were evaluating and the vendor thought you were subscribing.

A five-question checklist

Run these five checks before you put a widget on your website. It takes a minute, and it settles the question without reading any terms.

CheckPoints to real freePoints to a countdown
Did the signup form ask for a card?No card field at allA card field, even one marked optional
Does the app show a date anywhere? No date, just a usage counterA countdown, or the words trial ends
What does the billing page say?No payment method savedA saved card and a next charge date
Is there a visible monthly cap?A number that resets each monthEverything unlocked, with no cap shown
What does the pricing page call it?Free plan, or free foreverFree for 14 days, or start your trial

One more test, and it is the strongest. Open the billing page on day one, before you build anything. If there is no payment method saved and no next charge date, you are on a real free plan. If there is, set a calendar reminder for two days before that date. Not the day itself.

Card-free plans: what the EzyConn free plan includes

Full disclosure, since this is our blog: EzyConn is our product. Our free plan takes no card.

Five hundred messages a month is about sixteen a day, counting both sides of each exchange. For a plumber, a dental practice or a small online shop, that is a genuine test of whether chat earns its place.

Teams, Slack and WhatsApp work on every plan, Free included. Paid plans are Starter at $25 a month and Professional at $95 a month, and paying annually takes 20% off. Full detail sits on the pricing page.

How the other free choices compare

Crisp is worth naming for a different reason. Its free tier includes no AI at all, so treat it as a human live chat product rather than a free AI chatbot. Removing the Crisp watermark only becomes possible on the Plus plan at $295 a month, so plan for a branded widget until then.

Tidio does put AI in its free tier, but read the wording carefully: the 50 Lyro conversations are described as a one-off allowance, not a monthly reset. Once they are spent, free AI stops for good. Removing Tidio branding costs roughly $16.67 a month on lower tiers.

Intercom has no free tier to compare. It charges $39 per seat per month, and its Fin agent adds $0.99 for every resolution on top. That is a reasonable model for a funded support team with predictable volume. It is not a place to test an idea for nothing. For anything not listed here, we describe how a vendor bills rather than quoting a figure, because we will not publish numbers we have not verified.

What to do in your first week

Treat a free plan as an experiment with a question attached. Ours is usually the same one: do people on this website actually want to talk to us? Our own scan of small business websites found that only 7.5% run any chat at all, so most owners genuinely do not know the answer. The method and the numbers are in our live chat adoption study.

  • Install the widget on one page that gets real traffic, not the whole site.
  • Let the AI read your website so it can answer from your own words.
  • Read every transcript for the first week. All of them, not a sample.
  • Count how many chats a human had to take over. That is your real deflection number.
  • Check your usage against the cap on day 21, not day 30.

If you hit the ceiling early, that is a good problem and a clear signal to pay. If you barely used it, you have learned something for nothing, which is the entire point of a plan that never asked for a card. We keep a wider shortlist on our best free AI chatbot page, and a setup walkthrough on the free AI chatbot for website page.

Common questions

Is there a free AI chatbot that does not ask for a credit card?

Yes. EzyConn's free plan asks for an email address and a password, nothing else, and it does not expire. It includes 2 seats, 500 messages a month, one chatbot.

Why do so many free chatbot plans still want my card details?

A saved card lets the vendor turn the free period into a paid subscription without asking you again. It also lets them bill extra usage automatically. Neither is dishonest, but both shift the effort onto you: cancelling takes action, while being charged takes none.

How do I tell a free trial from a free forever plan?

Look for an end date. A trial names a day when the free part stops, usually in the app header or the billing page. A free forever plan names a cap instead, such as a number of conversations that resets each month. If the signup form asked for a card, assume you are on a countdown until you can prove otherwise.
