WhatsApp Automations: What They Actually Do, and What They Do Not
We scanned 4,278 small business websites. Among the ones that had any chat at all, more than half had no chat software. They had a WhatsApp link. It starts a conversation and then leaves it on somebody's personal phone, with no history, no routing and no handoff. That gap is what people are really trying to close when they search for WhatsApp automation.
The short version
- "WhatsApp automation" means four different jobs. Answering, routing, remembering, and sending. Most tools do some of them.
- EzyConn answers, routes and remembers. WhatsApp becomes a channel into a shared inbox, with AI answering first.
- WhatsApp works on every plan, Free included.
Most businesses with "chat" only have a WhatsApp link
In our study of 4,278 small business websites across seven countries, only 7.5% ran any chat widget at all. Among that small group, a plain WhatsApp click-to-chat button was 53.7% of everything we found, which is more than every dedicated chat vendor combined.
The split by country is even sharper. In the UAE, 43.4% of the businesses we scanned had chat, and almost all of it was WhatsApp. In the United States it was 5.9%. If you sell in a WhatsApp-heavy market, WhatsApp is not one channel among several. It is the channel.
Here is why that matters for automation. A business with a WhatsApp button has already made the hard decision. They have accepted that customers should be able to message them and that someone has to answer. What they have not solved is everything after "hello": the thread sits on one phone, a colleague cannot pick it up, nothing replies overnight, and when that person leaves the company the history leaves with them.
The four things people mean by "WhatsApp automation"
The phrase is used for at least four separate jobs, and the tools that do one often do not do the others. Work out which one you actually need before you compare anything. This table is what EzyConn does.
| Automation | What people mean | EzyConn |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-answer common questions | AI replies instead of a person | Yes |
| Route to the right human | Hand the thread to a named person or team | Yes |
| Reply without a new dashboard | Agents answer from Teams, Slack or Zoom | Yes |
| One history across channels | Website chat, WhatsApp, Telegram and email in the same inbox | Yes |
| Cover after hours | Something answers at 11pm so the lead survives | Yes |
What EzyConn actually does on WhatsApp
One sentence: WhatsApp becomes a channel into your shared inbox, and the AI answers first.
When someone messages your WhatsApp Business number, the AI reads it and replies. It runs on GPT-4o and Claude, and it is trained on your own website, docs and FAQs rather than on generic knowledge. Opening hours, delivery times, whether you take a certain insurance, how much a callout costs: those get answered in seconds, at any hour, without waking anyone up.
When the AI should not answer, it hands over. The conversation appears in the shared inbox with the full thread attached, and your team can reply from there or natively from Microsoft Teams, Slack or Zoom. No new dashboard to keep open, and no personal phone numbers handed out.
The history is the part people underestimate. The same customer who asked a question on your website last month and by email last week shows up as one person with one history, not three strangers. Setup detail lives on the WhatsApp integration page.
What EzyConn does best, said plainly
EzyConn answers people who message you on WhatsApp, and it offers a person and hands the chat to your team on a yes.
What it costs
WhatsApp works on every plan, the free one included.
| Plan | Price / month | Messages a month | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 forever | 500 | Included, within 2 integrations |
| Starter | $25 | 5,000 | Included, within 5 integrations |
| Professional | $95 | 25,000 | Included, within 10 integrations |
| Enterprise | Talk to us | Sized to your volume | Included |
Professional brings up to 10 agent seats and Starter 3 plus the owner, which matters more than it sounds: prices are per workspace, so you can put the whole shop on it without the bill moving. Annual billing takes 20% off. Workflows and AI Actions arrive on Starter, and AI Insights and AI Email on Professional. The full ladder is on the pricing page.
A sensible way to start
Do not automate everything on day one. The teams that get this right tend to move in the same order.
- Write down the ten questions you answer most. Nine times out of ten they are hours, price, location, availability and "do you do X".
- Point the AI at the pages that answer them. It trains on your own site, so fix the page rather than writing a script.
- Let it answer WhatsApp for a week while your team watches the inbox. Read what it gets wrong.
- Set the handoff rule. Anything about money owed, complaints or medical detail should go to a human immediately.
- Only then turn on website chat and email behind the same inbox, so one customer stays one thread.
Frequently asked questions
What is a WhatsApp automation?
It is any rule or AI that acts on a WhatsApp message without a person doing it. In practice the term covers four different jobs: answering a question automatically, routing the conversation to the right human, keeping the history in one place, and sending outbound messages to a list. Tools differ enormously in which of the four they do. EzyConn answers, routes and keeps the history in one inbox, with AI answering first.
Which EzyConn plan includes WhatsApp?
Every plan does, the free one included. WhatsApp counts toward the plan's integration allowance: 2 on Free, 5 on Starter at $25 a month and 10 on Professional at $95 a month. Starter also brings 3 agent seats plus the owner and 5,000 messages a month, and Professional brings up to 10 agent seats and 25,000 messages. Annual billing takes 20% off any paid plan.
Do my agents need WhatsApp installed on their phones?
No. Messages arrive in the EzyConn shared inbox, and agents can also reply natively from Microsoft Teams, Slack or Zoom. Nobody has to hand out a personal number, and nobody loses the conversation history when they leave the company.
Is a WhatsApp click-to-chat button enough on its own?
It is enough to start a conversation and not much else. In our scan of 4,278 small business websites, a plain click-to-chat button was 53.7% of all chat found, more than every dedicated chat vendor combined. The problem is what happens next: the conversation lands on one person's phone, with no shared history, no routing to a colleague, and nothing answering at 11pm.
Keep WhatsApp. Add everything around it.
Your customers already use WhatsApp, so nobody has to change habits. EzyConn puts the AI, the shared history and the handoff behind it. Start free and turn WhatsApp on next to the website widget, on the same free plan.
