How to Cancel Crisp Without Breaking Anything
Clicking cancel takes a minute. Doing it in the wrong order costs you a month of transcripts, a balance you already paid for, and a fortnight of enquiries that quietly went nowhere. Here is the safe sequence.
The one rule
Nothing gets cancelled until the exports are on your disk and the replacement is live and answering. Everything below is just that rule spelled out. Cancelling is not the first step of leaving. It is the last one.
The order of operations
| Step | Do this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Decide: cancel or downgrade | Downgrading to the free tier keeps a door open at $0 |
| 2 | Export everything | While the account is still fully paid and active |
| 3 | Get the replacement live | Answering real questions, on real pages |
| 4 | Spend down the AI credit | You already paid for it. Use it. |
| 5 | Redirect inbound routes | Links, signatures, QR codes, forwarding rules |
| 6 | Remove the old script | Ten minutes, once steps 3 and 5 are done |
| 7 | Cancel at period end | Never mid-cycle |
| 8 | Keep read-only access | Until the term genuinely lapses |
Your unused AI credits are real money
This is the step people skip, and it is the one with a number attached. AI credits means you bought a dollar balance, and the automation draws it down as it answers. If you close the account with credit sitting in it, you are handing back something you already paid for.
Work out roughly what is left. At the published rate, about $5 of credit is around 90 automated conversations, about $25 is around 450, and about $75 is around 1,350. So a $20 leftover balance is roughly 360 automated conversations of value. That is not rounding error, it is a fortnight of overnight cover.
The move is simple: in your final weeks, let the bot run freely rather than turning it down. And ask support in writing whether unused credit is refundable before you cancel, not after. Assume it is not, plan for that, and be pleasantly surprised if you are wrong.
What to export, and when
Do it while the account is fully paid and active, never after you have downgraded. Three things are worth pulling: conversation transcripts, your contact list, and your knowledge base articles. Open each file afterwards. An export that silently truncated is worse than no export, because you will not find out until you need it.
Chatbot scenarios and triggers are the exception. No vendor writes those in a format a competitor reads, so there is nothing useful to export. If the logic took you a while to build, screenshot the flows before you go, purely so you can rebuild from a picture instead of from memory.
What actually breaks when the widget comes off
Removing the script is easy. The damage comes from everything else that quietly pointed at it.
| What | What happens |
|---|---|
| Help centre and website chat buttons | Dead links until you repoint them |
| Email signature chat links | Quietly broken for months if you forget |
| Printed QR codes and menus | Cannot be recalled, so redirect the URL instead |
| Team chat notifications | Stop arriving, and nobody notices for a week |
| Email forwarding into the inbox | Messages go nowhere at all |
| The visitor with a question | No obvious way to reach you |
Walk that list before you pull the script and the removal becomes a ten-minute job. Walk it afterwards and you spend a fortnight discovering broken paths one annoyed customer at a time.
Downgrade instead of cancel, if you are unsure
The free tier is 2 seats with no chatbot and zero AI credits. That is not enough to run support on, but it is a door left open at no cost. If you are three weeks into a new tool and not certain yet, downgrading is the cheaper form of caution: you keep a fallback without paying for one. Check what archive access looks like on the free plan before you treat it as your record, and keep your exported files regardless.
Timing, and what to tell customers
Cancel at the end of a billing period. Cancelling in week two of a paid month usually means paying for four weeks and using two, and it removes your safety margin at the exact moment you might want it.
Tell customers nothing. If you do this properly, there is nothing to tell them: the bubble is in the same corner, the questions still get answered, and the only person who experiences a migration is you. A well-run cancellation is invisible from the outside. For the full switching plan around this, see our migration guide.
Where to land
If the credit balance is why you are leaving, the fix is a plan that counts messages instead of dollars. EzyConn includes GPT-4o and Claude on every tier with no per-resolution and no per-seat fees: 500 messages a month free with 2 seats and 5,000 on Starter at $25 and 25,000 on Professional at $95, with 20% off annual billing. Because the free plan does not expire, you can have it live and answering before you cancel anything, which is step 3 above. See the pricing page or the Crisp alternative page.
Frequently asked questions
How do I cancel Crisp safely?
Cancelling is a billing setting, so the button is the easy part. The order around it is what matters. Export everything while the account is fully paid, get your replacement widget live and answering, spend down any remaining AI credit, remove the old script from your site, redirect every inbound route that pointed at the old chat, and only then cancel, timed for the end of a billing period. Keep access until the term actually lapses so you have somewhere to go back to.
Do I get a refund for unused Crisp AI credits?
Treat the balance as non-refundable unless support tells you otherwise in writing, and ask before you cancel rather than after. AI credits are a dollar balance you have already paid for, so the practical move is to spend it rather than argue about it. If you have roughly $20 left, that is around 360 automated conversations at the published rate. Leave the bot running through your final weeks and let it earn out the balance instead of donating it.
What happens to my data when I cancel Crisp?
Assume you lose convenient access to anything you did not export, and do the exports first. The list is short: conversation transcripts, your contact list, and your knowledge base articles. Open each file afterwards to confirm it is complete and readable, then store it somewhere your team can search. Chatbot scenarios and triggers do not export in any format another vendor can read, so screenshot them if you want a record of the logic before it goes.
Should I downgrade to the free plan instead of cancelling?
Often, yes. The Crisp free plan is 2 seats with no chatbot and zero AI credits. That is not enough to run support on, but it is enough to keep a door open at no cost while you settle into a new tool. Downgrading also gives you a fallback if the replacement disappoints in week three. Check what archive access looks like on the free tier before you rely on it, and keep your exported files either way.
What breaks when I remove the Crisp widget?
More than the widget. Any link that pointed at the chat stops working, including help centre buttons, email signatures, printed QR codes and app deep links. Notifications into your team chat stop arriving. Anything forwarding email into the inbox goes nowhere. And the visitor who would have opened the bubble now has no obvious way to reach you. Fix the routes before you pull the script, not after, and the removal itself becomes a ten-minute job.
Have the replacement live first
2 seats, 500 messages a month, $0 forever. Stand it up before you cancel anything, so step 3 is done when you reach step 7.
Start freeCrisp plan and credit figures reflect published pricing as checked in July 2026 and may have changed. Billing, refund and data-retention terms are set by the vendor, so confirm them directly before you cancel.
