Free Live Chat Software: What "Free" Actually Means
Nearly every chat vendor advertises a free plan. Almost none of them mean the same thing by it. Here is how to read a free tier before you paste the code onto your site.
The short version
- "Free" has five meanings. Only one of them is a permanent plan with honest limits.
- The watermark is the usual toll. Free often means the vendor advertises on your site.
- Ask if the AI resets. A one-off allowance is a trial wearing a free-plan badge.
- Our free plan is real. 2 people, 500 messages a month. That is about three a day.
Free is not one thing
Search for free live chat software and you get a long list of tools that all look comparable. They are not. The word free is doing at least five different jobs across those results, and only one of them matches what most small business owners picture: a working chat widget on their site, permanently, at no cost.
Sorting the list is easier once you know the five shapes.
| Shape of free | What it means | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Free forever tier | A permanent plan with fixed caps | Whether the allowance resets every month |
| Free trial | The full product for a set number of days | Whether a card is required to start |
| Branded free tier | Free, with the vendor name on your widget | The price of the plan that removes it |
| One-off AI allowance | A pool of AI replies you spend once | Whether it refills, or stops for good |
| Open source | Free licence, you run the server | Hosting, updates and security patches |
Trap 1: the watermark
The most common price of a free plan is a small line of text under the chat window with someone else's name on it. It sounds trivial. It is not. On a plumber's site or a law firm's site, that line tells every visitor which budget tier the business sits in, on the exact screen where they were deciding whether to trust you.
The reason it matters commercially is what removal costs. On Crisp, the watermark can first be removed on the Plus plan at $295 a month. On Tidio, removing the branding is an add-on of roughly $16.67 a month on lower tiers. So the honest way to read those free plans is not "free" but "free until you want it to look like yours."
What is worth checking on any shortlist is where that line sits on each vendor's ladder, because it moves the real cost of a free plan more than almost anything else.
Trap 2: AI you only get once
This is the subtlest one, and the one that catches most people. A free plan says it includes AI conversations. It does. What it may not say clearly is that the pool never refills.
Tidio's free tier is the clearest published example: its 50 Lyro conversations are a one-off allowance rather than a monthly reset, so free-tier AI stops permanently once they are spent. Crisp goes the other way and includes no AI credits on the free plan at all, which is at least unambiguous, though it means you cannot test the part of the product you would actually be buying.
One question sorts this out before you sign up: does the allowance reset every month, or is it a one-time pool? If it is a pool, you are looking at a trial that has been labelled as a free plan.
Trap 3: seats, and the shared-login habit
Every free plan caps seats. That is fair. The problem is what happens next, because most tools in this category charge per seat once you move to paid. Intercom's Essential plan, for instance, is $39 per seat per month on monthly billing, so ten people is $390 before any AI usage. Zendesk, Freshdesk, Front and Help Scout all use some version of per-user pricing too.
The predictable result is that small teams share one login to avoid the cost. It works, briefly, and then it breaks your reporting, breaks your audit trail, and makes two people answer the same customer. If you expect a rota, a weekend person, or an occasional stand-in, look at what the seat model costs at your real headcount rather than at the free tier. On EzyConn, Starter at $25 a month covers 4 people and Professional at $95 a month covers 11.
Trap 4: one widget, one domain
Free plans normally cover a single site. This only bites a certain kind of business, but when it bites it is immediate: an agency running client sites, a franchise with a page per location, or anyone with a separate landing-page domain for ads.
What our free plan is, precisely
| EzyConn free plan | What you get |
|---|---|
| Price | $0, forever, no card at signup |
| People | 2 (you and one agent) |
| Messages | 500 a month, reset monthly |
| AI credits | 1,000 a month |
| Chatbots | 1 |
| Integrations | 2 |
| Vendor branding | EzyConn badge, removable on Professional |
| AI models | GPT-4o and Claude, same as paid plans |
500 messages a month works out to roughly three a day. For a dental practice, a solicitor, a gym or a local trade business, three a day is usually plenty, and plenty of accounts sit on the free plan indefinitely without noticing a ceiling.
Free chat is not competing with paid chat
One finding from our own research reframes this whole decision. We scanned 4,278 small business websites across seven countries and found that only 7.5% ran any chat widget at all. Among the ones that did, a plain WhatsApp button accounted for 53.7%, more than every dedicated chat vendor combined.
So if you are weighing up a free plan, you are almost certainly not switching from a paid tool. You are moving from nothing, or from a phone number. The bar a free plan has to clear is not "is it as good as the $200 product." It is "does it answer the enquiry that currently arrives at 9pm and goes unread until Tuesday." A capped free plan clears that bar easily.
When free stops being enough
Upgrade when you hit a wall that is costing you money. There are only three real walls: volume, seats and domains. Here is where each plan sits, before the 20% annual discount.
| Plan | Per month | Messages | People |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 500 | 2 |
| Starter | $25 | 5,000 | 4 |
| Professional | $95 | 25,000 | 11 |
| Enterprise | By agreement | By agreement | Large teams |
The AI models are the same on every row, GPT-4o and Claude, including on the free plan. You are paying for capacity and seats, not for a better brain. Full detail is on the pricing page, and if you have not installed a widget before, the setup walkthrough takes about ten minutes. The live chat feature page covers what the widget itself does.
Frequently asked questions
Is free live chat software actually free?
Sometimes. Free means at least five different things in this market: a permanent plan with caps, a trial with a countdown, a free plan that puts the vendor logo on your site, a one-off pool of AI replies, and open source software you host yourself. Only the first one is free in the way most people mean it. Check whether the allowance resets every month and whether a card is required at signup.
What is the catch with free live chat plans?
Usually one of five things: the vendor brands your widget, the AI is a one-off allowance rather than a monthly one, the seat cap is lower than your team, the plan covers a single domain, or the free tier has no AI at all. None of these are dishonest on their own. They only become a problem when you find out in month two rather than on day one.
How many conversations does a free live chat plan usually cover?
It varies widely, and the more important question is whether the number resets. EzyConn free includes 500 messages every month, which resets on your billing date. That is roughly three a day. A quiet local business will not touch the ceiling.
Does free live chat put the vendor logo on my website?
On most tools, yes. Removing the branding is one of the most common reasons a free plan turns into a paid one. On Crisp, watermark removal starts on the Plus plan at $295 a month. On Tidio, it is an add-on of roughly $16.67 a month on lower tiers. On EzyConn, removing the badge comes with the Professional plan.
When should I upgrade from a free live chat plan?
Upgrade when you hit a wall that costs you money, not before. The three real walls are volume, seats and domains. If the AI runs out mid-month and people wait for an answer, upgrade. If a third person needs a login, upgrade. If you run a second site, upgrade. EzyConn paid plans start with Starter at $25 a month for 4 people, and Professional at $95 a month covers 11.
A free plan with the limits written down
2 people, 1 chatbot and 500 messages a month that reset. GPT-4o and Claude are included, the same models as every paid plan. No card at signup.
