ChatGPT Shopping in 2026: What Stores Need to Know

Shoppers now compare products inside ChatGPT, then come to your site to buy. What is actually live, how products get into AI answers, and why your product page has to answer sharper questions than it used to.

EzyConn EditorialThe EzyConn blog 12 min read Updated

The short answer

ChatGPT shopping is live for users in the U.S.: ChatGPT shows products with images, prices and reviews, and the shopper buys on the store’s own site. OpenAI moved away from its standalone Instant Checkout in March 2026. Shopify and Etsy catalogues are already connected; other stores can apply to send a product feed. What gets you shown: complete product data, clear delivery and returns policies, genuine reviews, and pages AI crawlers can read. Checked 20 October 2026.

A year ago the story was that ChatGPT would become a shop. In September 2025 OpenAI launched Instant Checkout, which let people in the U.S. buy from Etsy sellers without leaving the chat, and said more than a million Shopify merchants were coming soon. Six months later it changed course. Today ChatGPT mostly does the part shoppers find hardest, working out what to buy, and then hands them to the store.

For a small or mid-sized online store that is good news with a catch. The good news: you keep the sale, the checkout and the customer. The catch: the shopper who lands on your product page from ChatGPT has already compared you with four alternatives. They are not browsing. They have one or two specific questions left, and your page has a few seconds to answer them.

This guide sets out what is confirmed today from each platform’s own pages, how products get into AI answers, and what to change on your store this week. Every platform claim below was read on the platform’s own site on 20 October 2026. This area changes month to month, so where two official pages disagree, we say so.

What changed between September 2025 and now

29 September 2025. OpenAI announced Instant Checkout, powered by a new open standard it built with Stripe, the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). U.S. users could buy single items from U.S. Etsy sellers inside the chat, and merchants would pay “a small fee on completed purchases” (OpenAI, September 2025).

24 March 2026. OpenAI relaunched shopping as a visual discovery experience: browse products, compare them side by side with price, reviews and features, and refine the list in conversation. In the same post it wrote that “the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide, so we’re allowing merchants to use their own checkout experiences while we focus our efforts on product discovery” (OpenAI, March 2026). ACP was extended to carry product feeds and promotions, and OpenAI named Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe’s, Best Buy, The Home Depot and Wayfair as integrated. For Shopify stores, it said product data already arrives through Shopify Catalog, with “no additional work” needed.

Today. OpenAI’s merchant page says it is “moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience”, that purchases are completed on merchant-owned websites or apps, and that there are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT. It says shopping is live for ChatGPT users in the U.S., that Shopify and Etsy sellers need no application, and that a self-serve merchant platform is planned for later this year (chatgpt.com/merchants, checked 20 October 2026). OpenAI’s help center article, updated on 19 October 2026, still says ChatGPT “may also show an Instant Checkout option” for some eligible products and merchants (OpenAI Help Center). Both pages agree on the part that matters to a store signing up now: the shopper finishes the purchase on your site.

What is live today, platform by platform

ChatGPT is not the only assistant shoppers use. This is the state of the three main routes for a small store, from each company’s own documentation.

Shopify agentic storefronts. Shopify describes agentic storefronts as active by default for eligible stores, covering ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. On ChatGPT, Shopify calls the channel “a discovery-focused referrer platform”: shoppers complete the purchase on your online store checkout, inside ChatGPT’s in-app browser or in a new tab. Orders from AI channels show in your admin with channel or referrer attribution (Shopify Help Center). On Microsoft Copilot, a Shopify-powered checkout inside the chat is on by default for eligible stores, and one requirement is that your terms of service, privacy policy and return and refund policy are completed in the admin (Shopify, Selling on Microsoft Copilot).

Google. Google built its own open standard, the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), for checkout inside AI Mode and Gemini. In September 2026 it said UCP “already enables direct checkout for hundreds of thousands of brands and retailers across Google”, a figure from Google itself (Google, September 2026). Self-service onboarding through Merchant Center is rolling out gradually in the U.S., with Australia and Canada to follow next year, and it requires a technical integration first (Google Merchant Center Help). For most small stores, the Google route today is the familiar one: a Merchant Center feed and good pages.

Perplexity. Perplexity launched shopping in the U.S. in November 2024, drawing on Shopify product data, with a free merchant program it described as aimed at large retailers (Perplexity, November 2024). We could not confirm the current terms from Perplexity’s own pages, so treat that as the last official word.

How products get into AI answers

OpenAI’s help center explains how ChatGPT chooses: a product appears when ChatGPT judges it relevant to the shopper’s intent, and it weighs structured data from merchants and third parties (price, description), other web content, and its own policies. For a request like a dog costume, it gives price, reviews and ease of use as examples of what it considers. Product results “are not ads, nor influenced by any OpenAI partnerships” (OpenAI Help Center). In practice that leaves five things a store controls.

1. Product data, in a feed

A feed is a file or connection listing every product and variant. OpenAI’s discovery feed has nine required fields: an ID, title, description, product URL, brand, seller name, image URL, availability and price. Optional fields cover variants, shipping, returns and reviews (OpenAI feed specification). Shopify sends this for you through Shopify Catalog, which it says “continuously updates your product data”. If you are on WooCommerce or another platform, a Google Merchant Center feed is usually the first one worth building, because Google uses it for Shopping and AI Mode alike.

2. Pages AI crawlers can read

ChatGPT finds web pages with a crawler called OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says sites that block it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and recommends allowing it in robots.txt (OpenAI, crawlers). It is separate from GPTBot, which collects training data, so you can allow one and block the other. Google, for its part, says there are no extra requirements and no special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal Search (Google Search Central). Our guide to generative engine optimization covers the wider picture for being cited by AI assistants.

3. Structured data on the product page

Product markup tells machines the price, availability, shipping and returns in a fixed format. Google documents it as merchant listing structured data (Google Search Central). Most Shopify themes and WooCommerce SEO plugins add the basics; check that shipping and returns are included, because those are the fields shoppers ask about most.

4. Reviews

ChatGPT shows review summaries that it writes from reviews on public websites, and OpenAI notes that it does not verify them. Reviews on your own product pages and on independent sites give it something to summarize. Ask real buyers, after the parcel has arrived, and reply to the critical reviews in public: a summary that reads “runs small, but the store swaps sizes quickly” still sells.

5. Clear policies

Delivery times, returns windows and contact details are part of the decision, and the feeds have fields for them. Google’s September 2026 advice to retailers also pushed “conversational attributes” in Merchant Center, extra context written for how people ask; Google says that in a test with lululemon, the brand’s attributes were used 50% of the time in relevant AI Mode answers (Google, September 2026). That is Google’s own figure from one large brand, not a benchmark, but the direction is clear: write down the details people ask about.

The bigger change: shoppers arrive later, with sharper questions

OpenAI’s pitch to merchants is that ChatGPT brings “higher-intent shoppers who are closer to making a decision” (OpenAI, March 2026). Think about what that means on your side. The shopper skipped your home page, your category page and your comparison chart. ChatGPT did that work. What is left are the questions an AI summary could not settle with confidence, and they are specific.

The questions AI-referred shoppers bring, and what your page needs
TopicWhat the shopper asksWhat the page should already say
Sizing and fit"I am a 10.5 in another brand. Which size in yours?"A size guide in centimetres and inches, with a line on how the item fits (true to size, runs small).
Compatibility"Will this case fit the 2024 model?"Exact model numbers, dimensions and what it does not fit, in plain text on the product page.
Delivery date"If I order tonight, will it arrive by Saturday?"Dispatch cut-off time, delivery times by region, and what happens at weekends and holidays.
Returns"Can I return it if I have opened it?"The returns window in days, the condition items must be in, and who pays for return postage.
Stock and variants"Is the wide fit in stock in green?"Stock per variant, kept current, and what the shopper can do when one is out.
Price and extras"Is that price with delivery?"Delivery costs and thresholds, taxes and any duties for the countries you ship to.
Example questions written for this guide.

If the page answers, the shopper buys. If it does not, the comparison they just made in ChatGPT is still open in the other tab, with four alternatives a tap away. That is why the work below is split between getting into the answer and closing the sale once the shopper arrives.

Worked example: from a ChatGPT answer to a store chat

Worked example. Fernway Outdoor is a WooCommerce shop we made up for this example. It sells trail running shoes from a warehouse in Colorado. Dana, also invented, lives in Denver. The times and prices are invented too.

  1. 20:12, in ChatGPT. Dana asks for waterproof trail running shoes under $150 that come in a wide fit. ChatGPT shows five options with prices and review summaries. One is Fernway's Ridgeline at $139, because the product page and feed say "wide (2E) fit available" in plain words.

  2. 20:15, on the product page. Dana taps through. She already knows what the shoe is. She has three questions left, and none of them is on the page above the fold.

  3. 20:16, in the store chat. "I wear a 10.5 in another brand. Which size in this?" The AI agent answers from Fernway's size guide page: the Ridgeline fits true to size, so 10.5, and the 10.5 wide is in stock at $139, read from the live WooCommerce catalogue. Time to answer: a few seconds.

  4. 20:17, delivery. "If I order tonight, will it reach Denver by Saturday?" The shipping page says orders placed before 15:00 Mountain time leave the same working day and Colorado deliveries take 1 to 2 working days. The agent explains that tonight's order leaves tomorrow and should arrive Thursday or Friday.

  5. 20:18, the hard one. "Can I return them if I have worn them on one trail run?" The returns page accepts unworn shoes within 30 days. The agent states the policy, says it cannot promise an exception, and offers a person. Dana accepts, and the request reaches Fernway's team in Slack with the whole conversation.

  6. 20:20, the order. Dana orders the 10.5 wide anyway. The next morning a teammate replies about trail returns, and that reply waits as a draft answer to approve, so the agent can use it next time.

Count what decided this sale. ChatGPT found Fernway because the fit was written down. Dana bought because three sharp questions were answered within four minutes, two of them by content Fernway already had, and the third by a person who could see the whole conversation. Nothing in the example needed a checkout inside ChatGPT.

Do these 8 things this week

  1. Check your robots.txt. Make sure OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot are allowed. Decide separately whether to allow GPTBot, which is for training. On Shopify, edit robots.txt.liquid if you need to.

  2. Open your platform's AI settings. On Shopify, go to Sales channels, then Agentic, and check whether your store shows as eligible for Shopify Catalog. If it says Ineligible, click it for the reason.

  3. Start or fix a product feed. Not on Shopify or Etsy? Set up Google Merchant Center first. If you sell in the U.S. and your feed meets OpenAI's specification, apply at chatgpt.com/merchants.

  4. Rewrite your ten best sellers. Plain, factual titles and descriptions: what it is, who it suits, measurements, materials, what it fits and what it does not. OpenAI's spec suggests titles up to 150 characters.

  5. Publish policies as real pages. Delivery cut-off times and delivery times by region, the returns window and conditions, and who pays return postage. On Shopify, complete Settings, then Policies.

  6. Check your structured data. Run a product page through Google's Rich Results Test and confirm price, availability, shipping and returns are all present.

  7. Ask for reviews from real buyers. Send a short request after delivery. Answer the negative ones in public; AI summaries read those too.

  8. Answer the last questions on the page. Add a short FAQ to each top product page, and put a chat on the store that answers from your pages and catalogue and hands over to a person. Then watch your analytics for visits referred by chatgpt.com.

None of this is specific to ChatGPT. Complete product data, clear policies and real reviews help in Google, in AI Mode and on your own site. If a busy season is close, our Black Friday and holiday support plan turns the same work into a week-by-week schedule.

Where EzyConn fits

EzyConn handles the last step in the worked example: the store chat. Its website AI agent answers shoppers on your store from your own content. You give it your store’s address, it finds the linked pages, and you keep the ones you want: products, size guides, shipping, returns and FAQs. You can add files such as a product export in CSV or a size guide in PDF, and write exact answers for the things you never want worded differently, such as your returns window. Those exact answers are used first.

On a WooCommerce shop it also reads your live catalogue, so it can say what you sell, what it costs and what is in stock; you connect it by the shop’s address, and it only reads. It replies in multiple languages. When a question goes beyond what you have written, it says it does not have that information and offers a person, and the request reaches your team in the inbox or in Slack with the whole conversation. When you change a policy, “read it all again” re-reads your site in one click. If you want the agent to look up an order, that runs through an AI Action connected to your own system, from the Starter plan.

Installing it is one script tag. The Shopify guide shows where to paste it in your theme, and the WordPress and WooCommerce guide covers the catalogue connection. The EzyConn page for online stores shows the rest. The website chat goes live in about 3 minutes, and the Free plan includes the AI agent with no card. You can put a free AI chatbot on your store today, ask it the questions from the table above, and see every plan’s limits on the pricing page, or start free now.

ChatGPT shopping: common questions

How do I get my products in ChatGPT?

If you sell on Shopify or Etsy, your catalogue is already connected, according to OpenAI's merchant page. Other stores can apply at chatgpt.com/merchants to send a product feed, which needs nine fields per item, including title, price, availability and product URL. ChatGPT also reads the open web, so allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and keep product pages complete and current.

Can customers buy directly inside ChatGPT?

For most stores, the purchase now happens on the store's own site. OpenAI said in March 2026 that it would let merchants use their own checkout, and its merchant page (checked 20 October 2026) says it is moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout. OpenAI's help center still mentions an Instant Checkout option for some eligible products and merchants.

Does it cost anything to appear in ChatGPT shopping?

OpenAI's merchant page says there are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT and are made on your site or app. Its help center says product results are chosen by ChatGPT and are not ads. Ads in ChatGPT are a separate product with their own rules.

Is ChatGPT shopping available outside the United States?

OpenAI's merchant page, checked 20 October 2026, says shopping is live for ChatGPT users in the U.S. and will expand to more regions over time. It also says a self-serve merchant platform is planned for later this year. A store elsewhere that ships to the U.S. can still apply.

What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol?

An open standard OpenAI launched with Stripe in September 2025 to let ChatGPT and stores exchange product and order data. It first powered Instant Checkout. Since March 2026 OpenAI uses it mainly for product discovery: stores share product feeds and promotions through it, directly or through providers such as Salesforce and Stripe.

Do I need a product feed if ChatGPT already crawls my site?

OpenAI's own answer is no, but a feed gives you more control over how your products appear and keeps prices and stock more current. For a small store, the practical order is: make the product pages complete first, then add a feed through Shopify, Google Merchant Center or an OpenAI application.

What are Shopify agentic storefronts?

Shopify's name for selling through AI channels. Eligible stores are active by default, and products reach ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini and Meta through Shopify Catalog or Shopify's Google channel. You manage it in Sales channels, then Agentic, in the Shopify admin. On ChatGPT, shoppers finish on your own checkout.

How do I get products into Google AI Mode?

Google says AI Mode has no extra requirements beyond normal Search: the page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. For products, keep a Merchant Center feed and Product structured data with price, availability, shipping and returns. Checkout inside AI Mode needs a Universal Commerce Protocol integration, which Google is opening gradually.
